Death Road to Canada is a Randomly Generated Road Trip Simulator. You control and manage a car full of jerks as they explore cities, recruit weird people, argue with each other, and face gigantic swarms of slow zombies. The game is fun and pretty much never gets old. The soundtrack is great, and has 4 player co-op.
Removing your save files
First thing you gotta do is to get rid of any save game files you currently have, as they’ll just be an obstacle on your way. Don’t worry, you’ll get them back!
You will find your save game files in this folder:C:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Roaming\.madgarden\DR2C
Create a folder like “savebackup”. Find all files that end with “save” or “slot” and move them into the folder you’ve just created.
Creating your custom chars
Since you’ve got the idea of going on the Death Road with your mates, guess you’d have the custom chars for all of your crew, wouldn’t you? If not, go to “Custom Characters” menu in the game and prepare some, it’s fun!
Now, you are going to create the save file we will mess around with. Pick first two of your buddies on the starting screen. I also recommend, if you have any characters that give you any special loot, like “Gun Collector”, to pick them now.
Make sure to pick the game mode you want to embark in! For a relatively relaxed party game I would recommend “Long winding road” or a “Normal mode”, but it’s up to you. If you want your friends to suffer and straight ahead hate the game (and you), go choose “Marathon” or something.
Anyway, as soon as you’re ready, start the game. Make sure to pick the top left save slot.
Read the first notice and keep driving.
You gotta wait until the game creates your characters and gives them first loot, which will happen right before the first ABL event. It’s OK – just pick any location, it doesn’t matter.
As soon as you’re there, ALT+F4 out of the game. Don’t worry, your save file is intact. It’s called “0.save”.
Now half of work is done, let’s take care about the rest of the crew.
Go back in the game and start anew. Now pick two remaining characters for your starting party. Game mode doesn’t matter now.
What matters is a save slot, which has to be the top right this time.
Then do the exact same thing as before: start the game, wait until you arrive at your first location, force close the game.
The save is once again there and called “1.save”.
Now it’s time for some tinkering.
Combining your two saves
First off, make copies of both “0.save” and “0.slot” and rename them into “2.save” and “2.slot” respectively.
Open up your “1.save” and “2.save” files. I recommend using Notepad++ for this, regular Notepad just won’t cut it.Now, in your “1.save” highlight everything from line 1 to line that says “2 char-validation” (it’s presumably #283). Copy the stuff. Go to “2.save” file and find the line that says, once again, “2 char-validation” there (should be #283). At the end of that line add two line breaks and insert what you’ve copied before. (I would add some picture here, but the screenshots of text are not really representative IMO, so just ask if it’s unclear).
You now have four characters in your save file, but they share the same IDs, which is not good. Highlight everything about character #3 (from line that says ”%NAME%” 1 #c .name!, it’s around line #285, and until the very first empty line down the road). Fixing each line manually is a mess, so use “Find and replace” function in Notepad++ (make sure you pick the “Only in highlighted” checkbox). Replace all occurrences of “1 #” with “3 #”. You’re almost done now; find the very last line of this character, that should say “1 char-validation” (it’s around line #425), and manually replace it with “3 char-validation”.
Now do the same thing with the next character (lines around 427-567), only replacing “2 #” with “4 #”, and fixing the last line to be “4 char-validation”.
We’re almost there. Now after the char #4 there’s an empty line, and right after it there’s a line saying “1 main-event-period!”, see it? Replace this piece:
2 1 team_charid!
1 0 team_charid!
With this one:
4 3 team_charid!
3 2 team_charid!
2 1 team_charid!
1 0 team_charid!
One more thing. I’m not a fan of breaking the game balance, but it’s obvious enough that the starting 8-10 bits of food are designed for two characters, so I thing it makes sense to double this number, as we start with four. To do this, replace the line (should be #580):
8 1 trunk.loot!
With this one:
16 1 trunk.loot!
Now really last bit: open your “2.slot” file and change “%NAME% with 1 others” to “%NAME” with 3 others”.
Check if it’s good
Now go back in the game once again and load your save, it will be in bottom left.
Sometimes as you load it, you may see the screen saying “There’s no one left to drive the car”. It means that you’ve messed up somewhere along the way. Do it again from the scratch step by step, exactly as it’s said in this guide, and you’ll probably be OK.
But most likely you will see your car, now actually full of jerks, and in a moment you will be picking your first loot location.
It means that you did good! You and your friends are good to go!
You will skip the first notice, but everything else, starting with the very first looting event, will be there for you. Enjoy!
Now, before you embark on the Death Road, I recommend you make a backup of both “2.save” and “2.slot”. This way, if you want to start over, you won’t have to tinker around again – you’ll just have to copy and paste your save files into save folder.
